A tragic incident unfolded outside a Belleville synagogue on Sunday as a 29-year-old man, identified as Sean Ward from Quinte West, Ont., opened fire on a police officer. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has confirmed that Ward was later pronounced dead. The exchange of gunfire occurred between Ward and Const. Jeff Smith, a seasoned officer with over 13 years of experience. Another officer also discharged their firearm during the confrontation.
Ward was rushed to the hospital in critical condition without vital signs and sadly passed away on Monday night. Meanwhile, Const. Smith, who initially suffered critical injuries, has since been upgraded to stable condition after being in the ICU.
The shooting took place on Yom Kippur, a significant day for the Jewish community, prompting the president of the Sons of Jacob synagogue to denounce the incident as a “hate crime.” Although the motive behind the shooting has not been officially confirmed by Belleville police or the SIU, spokesperson Kristy Denette mentioned during a press conference that it would be reasonable to assume a hate-driven motive.
