Get ready to experience the glitz and glamour of the Montreal International Black Film Festival (MIBFF) as it makes a grand return for its 22nd edition. From September 23 to 27, the festival will transform Montreal into a vibrant cinematic hub, showcasing a captivating lineup of 70 films from 21 different countries. This event solidifies its position as Canada’s premier bilingual Black Film Festival, providing a platform for diverse voices and stories to shine.
Founder and president of MIBFF, Fabienne Colas, describes the festival as a celebration of unique and authentic narratives that might not otherwise receive recognition. Over the past 22 years, the festival has evolved alongside societal changes, offering audiences a fresh perspective on storytelling and social issues.
The festival kicks off with star-studded excitement on opening night, featuring the Quebec premiere of The Eyes of Ghana, a film by Oscar winner Ben Proudfoot and executive producers Michelle and Barack Obama. This film, among others showcased during the festival, underscores MIBFF’s dedication to amplifying Black voices on screen and inspiring positive societal change.
In addition to international features, the festival highlights local talent with screenings of works by Montreal filmmakers such as Jireh Cospel: Hearts by Wylem Decaille, Maboungou: Being in the World by Marlene Millar and Philip Szporer, and The Night Watches Us by Stefan Verna. The event will also feature Will Prosper’s latest documentary, ‘Coeur de motard’, which sheds light on a local biker gang’s efforts to challenge stereotypes and uplift the community.
MIBFF’s Black Market segment will host panel discussions and workshops tailored for industry professionals, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Furthermore, the festival offers free screenings across Montreal for its seventh consecutive year, emphasizing inclusivity and accessibility for all film enthusiasts.
Colas emphasizes that the festival caters to a diverse audience, welcoming individuals of all backgrounds to explore a variety of genres from drama to comedy. Beyond the film screenings, attendees can explore the Pop-Up Market at the Colas Theatre, showcasing the talents of Black artisans and entrepreneurs from Montreal.
The festival reaches its climax on September 27, 2026, with the Quebec Premiere of DIYA, directed by Achille Ronaimou. Colas teases the film’s premise, hinting at a man’s life-altering journey following a tragic event, without giving away any spoilers.
