The Ottawa city council has decided to rename Trump Avenue, putting an end to the debate surrounding the politically charged street name and cutting its ties to U.S. President Donald Trump.
This move, prompted by a staff report recommending the change, comes amidst strained Canada-U.S. relations due to trade disputes.
Trump Avenue, situated in Ottawa’s Central Park neighborhood, was part of a development constructed in the late 1990s and early 2000s on former Experimental Farm land. The neighborhood was crafted with a New York City theme, with streets and parks named after Manhattan landmarks such as Manhattan Crescent, Staten Way, Bloomingdale Street, and Madison Park. Originally, the street was named after Trump when he was mainly recognized as a prominent New York developer.
The council’s decision signifies the start of the process to select a new name, inform residents, and update official records. The transition will involve coordination with emergency services, utilities, and Canada Post to ensure a smooth changeover.
This renaming comes in the midst of escalating tensions between Trump and Canadian officials, involving disputes over tariffs, trade talks, and public statements that have affected local politics. City councillors emphasized that while the street was not meant to honor the U.S. president, its existence had become a source of unease for residents.
City officials have assured that homeowners on the affected street will be consulted before a final name is chosen.
