On September 17, two young men were caught driving their cars across the recently opened Crosscut Bridge in North Vancouver, reportedly for the sake of capturing social media-worthy pictures. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to the scene around 9 p.m. and issued tickets to the drivers for multiple violations, including driving without due care, disregarding restricted access rules, and having tinted windows.
The Crosscut Bridge, which spans over Highway 1 and was unveiled to the public in August, is designated solely for pedestrians and cyclists. Despite the clear restrictions, the two men in their twenties were fined approximately $600 each for their unauthorized joyride.
According to the offenders, their motivation stemmed from an attempt to replicate photos they had seen online featuring their vehicles against the backdrop of the highway underneath the bridge. Fortunately, a City of North Vancouver spokesperson confirmed that there was no structural damage caused by the incident.
In response to this breach, additional safety measures have been implemented to prevent similar occurrences. Temporary concrete barriers have been installed until new bollards are put in place to safeguard against unauthorized vehicle access.
The RCMP revealed that the two cars managed to enter the bridge through a lane intended solely for cyclists, highlighting the need for heightened vigilance in protecting restricted areas from such unauthorized intrusions.
