The Transportation Safety Board Urges Improved Train Wheel Inspections to Prevent Derailments
Following a recent incident east of Edmonton where a broken rim caused a CN Rail train carrying grain to derail near Uncas, Alberta, the Transportation Safety Board emphasized the need for more thorough inspections of train car wheels to prevent accidents.
The derailment, which occurred in April 2023 on a train headed to Prince Rupert, B.C., involved 18 cars going off the tracks, fortunately without any reported injuries. The investigation revealed that a shattered rim on one wheel had worsened during the journey, eventually leading to the derailment. Despite meeting inspection standards, the wheel failed, highlighting the limitations of current inspection practices in identifying wheels at risk of catastrophic failure.
The report released Thursday suggested that Transport Canada should utilize advanced analytics of wheel impact load detector data to enhance the identification and removal of faulty wheels before they cause accidents. The Transportation Safety Board stressed the importance of leveraging existing data to proactively address potential wheel issues and prevent future derailments.
In response to the report, TSB chair Yoan Marier emphasized the significance of early detection through data analysis in preventing wheel failures. Transport Canada has yet to comment on the recommendations provided in the report.
