As winter approaches, drivers in British Columbia are reminded of the mandatory winter tire rules on highways outside the Lower Mainland and Greater Victoria. From October 1 to either March 31 or April 30, depending on the highway, vehicles must be equipped with winter tires or chains for commercial vehicles.
It is crucial for drivers to adhere to these regulations to ensure safety on the roads. Winter tires must bear the three-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol or the letters “M” and “S” on the sidewall to indicate their suitability for winter conditions.
DriveSmartBC emphasizes the importance of checking the requirements for specific highways before embarking on a journey outside the Lower Mainland. They caution that tires with less than 3.5 mm of tread are considered worn out for winter conditions, contrasting with the 1.6 mm minimum for summer tires.
Failure to comply with the winter tire regulations can result in fines and penalty points on the driver’s license. Drivers face a $121 fine and two penalty points if their vehicle lacks proper winter tires where required. Additionally, a $109 fine is imposed if the tread depth falls below 3.5 mm.
