In a courageous sea rescue operation during stormy conditions off the coast of Matane, director Johnatan Brunet of the Matane City Fire Department received a prestigious Cross of Courage for his heroic actions. The ceremony, held by the Ministry of Internal Security in Quebec City on the National Day of Recognition of Firefighters, honored Brunet’s dedication to saving lives.
Brunet, a seasoned firefighter with 23 years of experience, expressed pride in his team and the meaningful impact of their work. When faced with a critical situation involving a sailor on a cement ship experiencing a medical emergency, Brunet sprang into action. Despite challenging circumstances, including frozen rivers and massive waves, Brunet led a successful rescue mission with the help of his team.
The rescue, which involved multiple risky attempts due to the adverse sea conditions, ultimately saved the sailor’s life. Brunet vividly recalls the satisfaction of handing over the survivor to waiting paramedics, a moment that underscored the importance of teamwork and dedication in the face of danger.
The event also honored other fire safety service members and citizens, including Sylvain Mireault, recognized for his longstanding contributions to fire safety. Mireault, a former firefighter and division chief, emphasized the selfless sacrifice required in emergency response work. With a focus on improving health and safety in the field, Mireault highlighted the evolution of firefighting practices over the years.
From promoting gender diversity in firefighting to expanding the scope of fire departments to include civil security, Mireault’s career exemplifies a commitment to serving the community. Despite the challenges and risks involved, Mireault emphasized that the ultimate goal of firefighting is to help and support people in times of need.
