Get Ready for Traffic Restrictions in Montreal This Weekend

Montreal is gearing up for a bustling weekend as it plays host to the 34th edition of the Marathon Beneva de Montreal. From October 9 to 11, the city will welcome around 35,000 runners from more than 57 countries, making it Quebec’s largest running event.

To ensure the smooth running of the marathon, organizers have announced road closures and traffic restrictions along the race routes. The City of Montreal has advised the public to plan ahead and consider alternative transportation options.

The marathon weekend kicks off on Friday, October 9, with the Marathon Expo at the Palais des congrès. The festivities continue with the Mile ON race at Maisonneuve Park, featuring the Quebec Mile Championship.

On Saturday, October 10, street closures around Maisonneuve Park will be in effect from 6:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The day’s events include the 5K Sports Experts, the Canadian Elite and Masters 5K Championships, as well as the 10K and a 1K race for young runners.

Sunday, October 11, will see street closures from 6:30 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. for the half-marathon and marathon races. The route will pass through notable landmarks such as the Concorde Bridge, Notre-Dame Street, Lafontaine Park, Saint-Joseph Boulevard, and Saint-Laurent Boulevard.

Authorities are urging the public to utilize public transit and active transportation on marathon day. The STM will enhance metro services to accommodate the expected increase in ridership.

In addition to the marathon-related closures, the Quebec transport ministry has announced other road closures affecting drivers across the Greater Montreal area during the long weekend. Highway 25, including the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel, will be closed toward the South Shore from October 9 to 13. Alternate routes will be in place to divert traffic away from the marathon route.
