Desjardins Data Breach Victims Receive $76.7 Million in Compensation
Desjardins customers affected by the major 2019 data breach have received nearly $76.7 million in compensation. Over 992,000 claims were submitted for two compensation programs, with most claims related to time spent on protective measures post-breach. Approximately $43.9 million was paid for these measures, while the remaining funds went to victims of identity theft.
The breach exposed personal information of millions of Desjardins members and clients, leading to a settlement of over $200 million approved by the Quebec Superior Court in 2022. The compensation process is ongoing, with efforts to pay around $51,000 to 74 late claimants pending court authorization.
In a significant development in 2024, the Sûreté du Québec charged six individuals in connection with the breach case.
