Côte Saint-Luc Employs Cutting-Edge License Plate Readers in Bold Move to Crack Down on Crime

The City of Côte Saint-Luc has recently introduced cutting-edge license plate reader cameras on Cavendish Blvd. underpass as part of a new safety initiative. Installed in late September, these cameras are designed to scan and record license plates of vehicles moving in both directions, capturing the plate number, vehicle image, and key location and time details.

According to a city press release, the collected data will be cross-checked against authorized lists such as Amber Alerts, missing-person cases, stolen vehicles, and ongoing criminal investigations. If a match is detected, Côte Saint-Luc Public Safety team will be promptly alerted. Subsequently, the information can be shared with Montreal police or other relevant authorities, following legal guidelines.

It is important to highlight that this technology will not be utilized for purposes such as fee verification, speed monitoring, issuing fines, facial recognition, or biometric identification. The primary focus remains on enhancing public safety and responding effectively to critical situations.

City officials are keen on evaluating the system’s performance and may consider expanding the camera network to other locations based on the pilot project’s outcomes.
