“Distracted Driving Violations Soar: BCHP Reports Doubling in September Numbers Compared to Last Year”

The BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) has recently revealed the results of its September campaigns targeting Distracted Driving and Occupant Restraint. Surprisingly, the data indicates a significant uptick in ticketing activities compared to the previous year.

Back in September 2025, BCHP issued 734 tickets across British Columbia for the violation of using electronic devices while driving. Fast forward to September 2026, the number of such tickets surged to 1,587, representing a substantial increase in enforcement.

Each ticket for using an electronic device while driving incurs a hefty fine of $368. Supt. Lori Orstad from BCHP emphasizes the importance of responsible driving behavior, urging motorists to reflect on their actions behind the wheel rather than pointing fingers at others.

In addition to distracted driving, failure to wear a seatbelt also saw a notable rise in ticketing. In September 2025, BCHP issued 456 tickets for this violation, which escalated to 826 in September 2026.

BCHP clarifies that their enforcement efforts encompass both warnings and tickets, with warnings constituting only about 3% of the total citations issued.
