A fire broke out early Sunday morning in a downtown New Westminster neighborhood, leading to the evacuation of an apartment building and a swift response from fire crews.
The incident occurred at an apartment complex on 37 Agnes St., close to the stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge, with flames erupting from a third-floor balcony shortly after 3 a.m.
Emergency services were quick to arrive after receiving a call around 3:30 a.m. Three ambulances were dispatched to the scene, providing medical assistance to three individuals who were later taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Residents were evacuated to a bus and transported to an emergency reception center established at the təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre for those displaced by the fire.
The City of New Westminster announced road closures, with Royal Avenue blocked off between Fourth Street and McBride Boulevard in all directions.
