As the countdown to the election day ticks, the race to represent Toronto-Danforth at city council is heating up with 18 candidates vying for the position. Among the contenders are Dianne Saxe, Mary Fragedakis, and Sara Erhhardt, each with their unique visions to win over the voters.
Toronto’s Ward 14, which spans from the Don Valley Parkway to Coxwell Avenue and from Lake Ontario to O’Connor Drive, includes vibrant neighborhoods like Riverdale, Leslieville, and the Danforth. Paula Fletcher, who served as the ward’s representative since 2003, made a surprising decision to withdraw from the race just days before nominations closed, leaving a void for others to fill.
Ernhardt, a former TDSB trustee endorsed by Fletcher, emphasizes her passion, work ethic, and community-driven approach. She aims to bring a progressive voice to City Hall, focusing on crucial issues such as road safety, especially amidst ongoing construction projects like the Metrolinx Ontario line in the area.
Meanwhile, Fragedakis, a seasoned public servant who previously represented part of Toronto-Danforth, brings her experience advocating for transit improvements and local businesses. She highlights key issues including transit reliability, public safety, and economic pressures, drawing from her role as the Chair of the Withrow Park Farmers’ Market.
Adding to the mix is Saxe, a well-known figure in environmental advocacy, who made a last-minute switch to contest in Toronto-Danforth. With a focus on environmental sustainability and affordable housing opportunities in the ward, Saxe believes her background as the former Environmental Commissioner of Ontario makes her a strong contender.
With the looming election, analysts suggest that name recognition could play a significant role in determining the outcome, as voters head to the polls on October 26th. The contest promises to be intense, with each candidate offering a distinct perspective on addressing the needs of Toronto-Danforth residents.
