“Next Week Marks the Launch of B.C.’s Dual Defense: Flu and COVID-19 Vaccinations Roll Out Together!”

As the Flu Season Approaches: Get Ready for Your COVID-19 and Flu Shots

Mark your calendars! The province’s annual COVID-19 and flu shot campaign is set to kick off on Tuesday, October 14, as announced by Chris Chiew, the vice-president of pharmacy and health-care innovation at London Drugs.

Chiew advises that the government will soon begin sending out invitations for people to register for their shots, with notifications expected to be received via text or email by the end of the week or the upcoming weekend. If you get a notification to book your shots, make sure to click on the provided link promptly.

While walk-ins are an option, Chiew suggests scheduling an appointment to secure your spot and avoid any disappointments. The flu shot typically takes a couple of weeks to become fully effective, with a nasal version also available but in limited quantities.

For optimal protection before the peak of the flu season in November, Chiew recommends getting vaccinated by the third week of the campaign launch. He highlights the importance of following all the preventive measures learned during the pandemic, such as staying home when sick, wearing masks when necessary, resting, staying hydrated, and maintaining good hand hygiene.

Despite the current “moderate” COVID-19 levels in B.C. with an upward trend in cases nationwide, free COVID-19 tests are still available at local pharmacies. If you’re unsure whether you have the flu or COVID-19, Chiew points out that the flu typically presents with malaise and fever, while COVID-19 symptoms start with a runny nose, sore throat, and coughing.

As we gear up for the flu season that typically ends by late February, it’s crucial to prioritize your health and well-being by taking advantage of the upcoming vaccination campaign.
