BC Highway Patrol takes stolen pets into custody on Vancouver Island

Five pets, two dogs and three cats, have been reunited with their owners after a long trek across western Canada, police say.

On May 24, around 2 p.m., a BC Highway Patrol officer was patrolling the Malahat Highway near Goldstream Park.

He saw the driver of a blue sedan giving him strange looks, police share.

The officer investigated the car’s Ontario license plates and learned the driver was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant from Saskatchewan.

Police stopped the sedan and took the lone Ontario 36-year-old human man into custody.

BC Highway Patrol contacted the Saskatchewan RCMP unit that had requested the arrest warrant and learned it was for the theft of animals.

The animals matched the description of the two dogs and three cats that were riding in the car with the wanted man.

The animals were transferred to protective custody of the local animal shelter.

The “goodest boys and girls” have now completed the long journey to be returned to their rightful owners in Saskatchewan.
