Some tickets still left for World Cup matches at BC Place, but demand surging

There are five matches left to be played at BC Place, and despite the electric buzz radiating out of Vancouver, some tickets are still available.

However, things are getting very close to selling out entirely.

Vancouver ticket reseller Kingsley Bailey tells 1130 NewsRadio people are snapping them up, but he says don’t expect prices to go down. He adds if you’re buying through him, it’ll cost, on average, and at least, $1,100 to get in the door.

“I think what happened is when Australia and Türkiye played here the other day… the Canadians looked at this and said, ‘Oh my gosh, this is big.’ Because it was unbelievable. There were so many red jerseys… and I think Canadians started to realize just how big soccer is around the world.”

Bailey is also making what some may feel is a debatable comparison.

“People are here. People are excited. There’s a heartbeat of football being played in Vancouver, and you’ve never seen it before. This is bigger than the 2010 Olympics. If you go back and remember 2010, how excited people were and how happy they were, and everyone got along — multiply that tenfold. Everybody is here. They’re happy. It’s a memory.”

Part of the reason why he argues that is because he’s seeing fans from all over walk in his door, not just from across this country.

“They’re coming from all over the place to go to this because it’s the first time they can experience a World Cup game on home soil. I’m seeing people from Singapore. I’m seeing people from Switzerland. I’m seeing people from Sweden. I’m seeing people from Australia,” Bailey said.

“I’m seeing people from Bosnia. I’m seeing some Serbs. I’m seeing some Argentinians. I’m seeing Hondurans. I am seeing some Colombians. I’m seeing Brazilians. This is the biggest event in the world, and you bet the true fan will travel to see this event.”

Bailey adds many people don’t seem to care tickets are expensive.

“I’m securing tickets for someone who lives down in California who’s waiting to watch the Switzerland game, and he’s basically given me carte blanche. He says, ‘I’m paying for them, you just get me the price you can.’”

He points out he’s hearing nothing but positive feedback about the city so far, saying people are impressed with the transit system, accessibility, kindness, and, of course, world-class beauty.

“They cannot believe how wonderful Vancouver is, and they’re going to come back. I’ve talked to quite a few people who have said, ‘I’m coming back.’ The last guy who was in here, he was in here with his son, and he says, ‘I’m going to come back with my wife,’ because he’s feeling guilty. She gave him and their eldest son permission to go to a World Cup game from Australia all the way here in Vancouver.”

Bailey wouldn’t be surprised if there was a tourism bump following the World Cup.
