Mobile home, log debris pile damaged in two separate blazes in Chilliwack

The Chilliwack Fire Department says it was kept busy Tuesday evening, responding to two separate blazes within an hour.

One of these fires is believed to have been intentionally set.

At 5 p.m., fire crews were sent to the scene of a structure fire, located on Watson Road near Cambridge Street, Asst. Chief of Operations Trevor Kirkpatrick tells 1130 NewsRadio.

“When they arrived, they encountered a fully-involved shed, and fire was extending to the exterior of a double-wide mobile home,” Kirkpatrick said.

“An exterior attack was initiated, and they successfully prevented the fire from spreading into the residence.”

The home suffered some damage to the siding and soffits, but the main structure was saved, he says.

Kirkpatrick says it isn’t clear how the blaze started.

“The cause of this fire is still under investigation, but initial reports indicate it could have originated from an e-bike battery that was charging outside the residence,” he said.

At 5:40 p.m., as crews were still tackling the structure fire, they got dispatched to a second blaze, this one at a log debris pile near Peach Road along the Vedder River.

Kirpatrick says it appears this fire was intentionally set.

“Witnesses had seen two individuals start the fire, and when RCMP arrived, they took those two individuals into custody,” he said.

The two fires were a short distance away from each other, but it isn’t clear if they are related.
