A dramatic incident unfolded in Calgary on Monday morning when a police officer was shot during a routine traffic stop. The suspect, after a wild chase through a popular city park, was later found dead.
According to Calgary police, the incident began in the southwest neighbourhood of Spruce Cliff around 11:45 a.m. when officers pulled over a vehicle. Unexpectedly, the man inside the vehicle opened fire, striking one of the officers. The suspect then fled into nearby Edworthy Park, firing shots as he ran towards the Bow River.
Continuing to shoot at officers and bystanders, the suspect then carjacked someone within the park and attempted to flee. However, his escape was short-lived as he became stuck after a brief drive and had to continue on foot.
Thanks to the HAWCS helicopter, officers were able to track the suspect’s movements and eventually located him in the Bow River, where he was found dead before they could apprehend him.
The injured police officer has been hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition, with no other injuries reported from the incident.
A “dangerous person alert” was initially issued around noon, prompting a search for the suspect in the park. By 12:45 p.m., authorities confirmed that the alert had been lifted, reassuring the public of the resolved threat.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken charge of the investigation, as is standard procedure for cases involving serious injury or death in police interactions.
Certain entrances to the park remain closed, and the public is advised to steer clear of the area. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the non-emergency line.
Road closures along Bow Trail SW and Sarcee Trail SW are in effect, and motorists are advised to avoid the area for safety reasons.
