According to Statistics Canada, the overall crime rate in Canada saw a decline in 2025, along with a decrease in the severity of crimes.
The country’s crime severity index witnessed a notable five percent drop last year, marking the second consecutive year of decline following an eight-year increase trend. Concurrently, the conventional crime rate, which measures the volume of crimes regardless of severity, also showed a decrease of two percent in 2025.
The reduction in the crime severity index was attributed to a continued decrease in break-and-enter cases, which have been on a downward trend for the third consecutive year. Additionally, the index indicated reductions in national homicide rates, motor vehicle thefts, and acts of extortion, while instances of shoplifting saw an increase.
Although fraud cases decreased in 2025, the rate of fraud incidents remains significantly higher, standing at 61 percent above the levels recorded in 2015. This trend reflects a substantial increase in reported fraud cases over the past decade.
