E-scooters have taken Vancouver by storm, with riders buzzing around the city at every turn. However, Vancouver Police are raising concerns about the lack of proper e-scooter safety practices among riders.
During a recent month-long police awareness campaign leading up to Labour Day, Insp. Stephanie Willoughby revealed alarming statistics. Out of 1275 riders stopped by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), a staggering 920 were not wearing helmets. These riders were issued fines ranging from $29 for not wearing a helmet to an average of $109 for various infractions such as underage riding and multiple passengers.
Despite the surge in e-scooter popularity as a convenient mode of transport, they pose significant safety risks. A report from the Canadian Institute for Health and Information highlighted a 40% increase in e-scooter-related hospitalizations across Canada between 2025 and 2026, affecting both children and adults.
The VPD initiated the campaign following a serious rider injury and a tragic fatality during the summer. One e-scooter enthusiast, Everest Hughes, known as ‘Limescootboyz’ on social media, has been gaining attention for his daring stunts on lime scooters. While he often rides without a helmet in his videos, Hughes emphasizes the importance of e-scooter safety and urges others to ride responsibly within their limits.
With safety at the forefront, the VPD reminds e-scooter riders to avoid sidewalks, always wear helmets, and adhere to the 25km speed limit.
