Before his name became synonymous with the famous Formula One track in Montreal, Gilles Villeneuve was a young man chasing speed on snowmobiles in rural Quebec. A new exhibition, “Salut Gilles, a Story of Speed in Montreal,” now invites visitors to trace Villeneuve’s journey from his early days in motorsport to his international racing stardom. With archival materials, photographs, videos, personal testimonies, and artifacts on display, this exhibition sheds light on the legacy that led to the naming of the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in honor of the late driver.
Created by the Société du parc Jean-Drapeau in collaboration with the Fondation Gilles Villeneuve, GV27, Christal Films, and Entract Films, this exhibition goes beyond celebrating Villeneuve’s racing career. It aims to provide insight into why the Montreal Formula One track bears his name and the significance behind it. Visitors will be taken on a journey through Villeneuve’s progression from snowmobile racing to Atlantic racing and ultimately to Formula One, offering a comprehensive look at his life and achievements in motorsport.
Featuring reproductions of Villeneuve’s racing suits and helmets made for an upcoming film, as well as personal items expected to be added later, the exhibition offers a unique perspective on the legendary driver’s life. For Mélanie Villeneuve, Gilles Villeneuve’s daughter and president of the Fondation Gilles Villeneuve, the exhibition represents a culmination of extensive collaboration and the opportunity to showcase a lesser-known aspect of her father’s story.
