Authorities in the Pemberton, British Columbia area have issued a warning as water from a glacial lake has begun flowing downstream, posing a threat to nearby properties.
The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District has advised the public to steer clear of Place Creek, Poole Creek, Gates Lake, and surrounding water channels due to the risk of flooding from a newly formed lake near Place Glacier.
According to the district, the swift movement of water, potential debris, erosion, and unstable streambanks make it hazardous as the water descends through Place Creek.
An evacuation order affecting 24 properties, which has been in effect since last month, remains in force. Residents under the evacuation order are instructed to stay away from the area until they receive further notice.
The statement from the district mentions that high water levels are anticipated for the next one to two days, with technical experts keeping a close watch on the situation.
The district plans to evaluate the extent of damages in the area within the next few hours and urges the public to avoid the affected region.
