A Calgary resident has been arrested for allegedly posting death threats against Prime Minister Mark Carney. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received reports on July 28 regarding threatening messages made on a YouTube account.
Jamie Dacosta, aged 31, was apprehended and charged with uttering threats against Prime Minister Carney, an offense under the Criminal Code. The investigation was conducted by the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) within the RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region.
RCMP Federal Policing is responsible for investigating a range of criminal activities related to security, including threats against high-profile individuals, terrorism, espionage, and cyber attacks. In a statement, they emphasized the importance of heightened vigilance in the evolving security landscape faced by public figures both domestically and internationally.
Dacosta is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Calgary on September 15.
