Montreal Municipal Workers Unite for Collective Agreements
Thousands of white- and blue-collar municipal workers in Montreal gathered near city hall for a union rally over the weekend, advocating for new collective agreements. The Syndicat des fonctionnaires municipaux de Montréal (CUPE 429), representing white-collar employees, and the Syndicat des cols bleus regroupés de Montréal (CUPE 301), representing blue-collar workers, have been without agreements since late 2025.
At the rally, the blue-collar union emphasized the pressing need for a tentative agreement to avoid potential labor disputes. Negotiations have shown some progress, with talks scheduled to continue in the coming days.
The unions are challenging the proposed terms by the city, citing concerns about reduced purchasing power for workers given the current economic conditions. In addition to the city workers, labor disputes are also looming at Parc Jean-Drapeau, where negotiations have stagnated for years.
Despite the ongoing tensions, the unions have assured that any pressure tactics during the UCI Road World Championships will not compromise the safety of cyclists. However, workers are prepared to escalate actions if necessary to compel the employer to return to the bargaining table with improved offers.
The CUPE 301 has garnered support from numerous other unions worldwide, underlining the solidarity among municipal employees in advocating for fair working conditions and agreements.
