A tragic hit-and-run incident in Vaughan has left a 60-year-old woman from Richmond Hill dead, as York police appeal for the driver responsible to come forward.
The victim, a dedicated live-in caregiver on her way to work, had just disembarked from a bus at Pine Valley Drive and Major Mackenzie around 8:30 p.m. on a Sunday evening. Walking along the narrow shoulder of Pine Valley in a northbound direction, she was struck by a vehicle traveling in the same direction.
The driver fled the scene, leaving the woman in critical condition.
According to York police media officer Kevin Nebrija, the victim was discovered by a passerby who noticed her suitcase abandoned on the roadside on a Tuesday afternoon just before 3 p.m.
Despite immediate medical attention, the woman was pronounced dead at the accident site. While her next-of-kin have been informed, her identity is being withheld by authorities for the time being, as she had not been reported missing prior to the tragic incident.
When questioned about the delay in finding the victim, Nebrija explained that the area where the accident occurred was somewhat secluded and surrounded by dense foliage and grass, making visibility low for passersby.
Nebrija emphasized the importance of the driver coming forward, stating that based on the severity of the injuries sustained by the victim, the driver would have been aware of the collision. As no description of the vehicle is currently available, he urged automobile repair shops to be vigilant for any vehicles displaying damages consistent with hitting a pedestrian and to report them to the authorities.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage relevant to the incident is encouraged to reach out to the police or Crime Stoppers.
