Homicide investigators announce charges in relation to the murder of a Surrey business owner

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) says charges have been laid in relation to the murder of Surrey business owner and photographer Baljinder Singh Garcha.

IHIT says shortly before noon on Jan. 13, emergency crews responded to reports of a man lying near 176 Street and 35 Avenue.

When crews arrived, they found Garcha suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Earlier that morning, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) responded to a report of a vehicle fire in the area of 40 Avenue and 189 Street. IHIT says the car is believed to be linked to the homicide.

Investigators say a 32-year-old Lower Mainland man was arrested without incident in Kamloops on May 28 and was subsequently charged with one count of first-degree murder.

“First-degree murder is the most serious offence, and the laying of this charge reflects our ongoing commitment to these complex homicide investigations,” said IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong.

“This case has had a huge impact on Mr. Garcha’s family, friends, and the broader community. While details about the motive and circumstances cannot be shared due to the ongoing court proceedings, investigators can confirm this was a targeted shooting.”

The suspect is scheduled to appear in court June 5.
